Hunter's Story

The Albuquerque Youth Orchestra under the direction of Rafael Videira, is hard at work learning the music for Hunter’s Story. Hunter is a young boy who has a rare disease that meant he needed a new heart. He received a new heart last fall, but his body rejected it. We have recently learned that he has been able to get another heart, and is doing well! Hunter wrote a story about his experience which I shared with the students in the orchestra. They came up with musical themes and ideas to use, which I then crafted into a piece for them to perform. The project is sponsored by the Sing Me a Story Foundation, and the performance will be on May 10 at 5pm at Popejoy Hall in Albuquerque on the University of New Mexico campus.

There will be a workshop performance of the complete opera on June 14, 2026 at 3pm in Keller Hall at the University of New Mexico. There will also be an open rehearsal and Q&A session on June 11 at 7:30pm in Keller Hall.

Two Worlds

My newest work is a song cycle that imagines the experience of my Grandfather, Vlad Ratay, as he immigrated to the United States in 1922 at the age of 19. Aleš Navrátil crafted the lyrics for the songs based on my grandfather's letters home.

This work was featured as the opening event for the 2024 Czech and Slovak Echoes in the USA festival in Cedar Rapids, Iowa with Michael Hix, baritone, Ahmad Hedar, piano, and Beth Ratay, flute. It had it's Czech premiere in November 2025 at the New Town Hall in Prague, with myself, Ahmad Hedar and Tadeáš Hoza, baritone.

This work was a finalist for the American Prize, Charles Ives vocal chamber music composition, professional division.
